Eric Montero is a gay, self-taught illustrator who makes incredible artwork from Mexico.
Thanks for being with us Eric, so how would you describe yourself and your inspiration?
I took an interest in drawing as a was a way to focus his thoughts on something creative. Inspiration plays hard to get, though. I’m passionate about beauty. When I’m inspired, I can go non-stop for hours. I’m always admiring the architecture and the landscape. It blows my mind.
Do you have an educational background in art?
I studied Classical Animation at the Vancouver Film School.
Were you always an artist? Or did you fall into it?
As a child, I was always complimented on my drawing skills, and I think I ended up believing it. Also, I grew up reading my big brother’s comic book collection. My favorite was Spiderman.
What kind of advice can you give to aspiring illustrators?
Just keep doing, it will always get better! Drawing is one of those things that the more you do, the better you get. It’s hard for me to look back and not be too critical about my work.
What’s your strongest memory of your childhood with art?
I almost failed middle school because I drew a daily comic book about the misadventures of one of my sinister teachers.
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
This comic book about my teacher made me aware of my interest in storytelling and drawing. A girl who sat behind me used to bug me all the time. She started sending me little notes with short stories about me marrying our evil Spanish teacher. She then suggested I should put images to her worlds, and that’s how it all started.
What’s an embarrassing moment you’ve had?
When I lost my comic book at school, and suddenly it was found it at the principal´s office…
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
A couple of people have told me that illustrations that I did gave them comfort through difficult times, I was touched.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Let the path reveal itself.”
Where can fans get more of you (social media, websites, etc.)?
