Cosplay Crush: Nipah

Greetings gay geeks and gaymers! Our cosplay crush this week is Nipah from Texas! What most people don’t know is that he’s half-Filipino, has a huge Lilo & Stitch plushie collection, and is an old school gamer who loves to play Nintendo 64. He’s done over 100 different cosplays like Harley Quinn from DC, Cloud from Final Fantasy, Riku from Kingdom Hearts, and Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. You probably saw him show off his cosplays at Anime Expo or A-Kon.

You’ve done over 100 different cosplays, which is your favorite?

My favorites would be Vanitas or Zenyatta. Vanitas was the most expensive cosplay I have done and hardest as well, the fabric alone was well over $200, though I love the series Kingdom Hearts and I wanted to cosplay a character that could challenge me crafting wise. It was a hard experience but it helped me grow as a cosplayer and allowed me to expand my artistry.

How old were you when you started doing cosplay?

I was 16 when I started! I have been cosplaying since 2010. A friend of mine told me that in order to get into a convention I had to wear a cosplay, little did I know at the time she was lying to get me to cosplay with her but I went along with it! Now here I am and very grateful for that small lie.

What was your first cosplay? And do you feel like you have improved?

Dark Link from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time was my first cosplay and oh boy, yes, I have improved tremendously since then.

What’s your most memorable experience while cosplaying (the more funny, awkward, weird, the better)?

First, one that comes to mind was a few years back I was cosplaying in a reverse gender Teen Titans group, the Robin of our group had forgotten to bring an adhesive to glue on her mask for her costume. So, she decided that she would go ahead and super glue the mask to her face. It worked. Though she did get a small chemical burn from the glue, don’t try this guys, not worth it.

What is it about cosplay that you like the most? (Creating Costume/Wearing The Costume/Competing?)

I enjoy the creation process of cosplay the most, creating something from nothing and seeing the final end product is just something that is hard to describe. Seeing the final product and all the hard work you did all come together to form one fantastic piece of art is a really enriching experience.

Cosplay is the art of costume and play, it’s a form of art that tests every aspect of your creativity and forces you out of your comfort zone to learn new tasks to accomplish your end goal. Cosplay is a way for me to express myself and show my art to the world in ways I never thought possible.

Cosplay seems to have opened a lot of doors for you.

Years ago I would have never thought I’d get to travel the world, meet so many amazing people and learn this craft with how much I have. It has truly changed my life and the journey just keeps going.

All my costumes are made by me unless stated, I have a couple that was given to me as a sponsorship by cosplay companies but asides that I haven’t ever bought one.

What are your thoughts about body image and cosplay?

Anyone can cosplay anything no matter what body type, for myself I like to stay fit/slim. Mostly due to the fact I never need to alter all the patterns I have premade for my various cosplays.

Has being LGBT affected how you cosplay?

Not so much, if anything it has given me just the freedom to cosplay a wider spectrum of characters. My fanbase is rather supportive of me and my fiance, I don’t really have any issues thankfully!

I’d be nothing without your support, so thank you for all the constant love you show me!

Do you feel like the cosplay world has changed over the past few years? More free and accepting?

Oh yeah! Cosplay used to be a female-oriented hobby but as the years have gone on more males are getting into it as well and it is becoming a more mainstream/accepted hobby amongst those who do not cosplay or have never known what it was, to begin with!

If money weren’t an issue, what would be your dream cosplay?

Probably a Monster Hunter cosplay, maybe Mizustune, his outfit is full armor/oriental fabric work and fur. Lots of tiny details that I’d love to work on someday.

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

Unstyled wigs are my number one pet peeve, a bad wig can easily make or break a character.

What would you say to a first time cosplayer?

Your first cosplay will never be perfect and you may compare yourself to others, though at the end of the day so long as you like your cosplay and you enjoy how it looks then that is all that matters. Cosplay for yourself, not for anyone else’s approval.

Don’t be afraid to ask other cosplayers for advice on certain aspects of things you don’t understand yet, most will help you or link you to sources that will show you what to do. There is a video tutorial for almost everything and anything with cosplay so be sure to do your own research as well!

What upcoming events will we see you cosplay at again?

A-kon is in a couple months!
