Shawn Ashmore, known for playing Iceman in the X-Men films says he would love to play a gay Iceman.
In April 2015, a younger Iceman in the All New X-Men was revealed to be gay. When confronting his future version, the Bobby Drake we know, it was revealed that he was living a closeted life.
When he was interviewed by Bang Showbiz, he said:
“What I think is interesting is that the X-Men have always been about diversity, it’s the key message of the film. For the X-Men, what makes us different is what makes us great, so if Iceman or Bobby came out in a movie, I think it would stay very much on point and on message about what films are about.”
Shawn Ashmore “came out” to his parents as a mutant. So it would be interesting to see a gay mutant on film as well.
In the movies, Shawn Ashmore played a heterosexual character who was in a romantic relationship with Rogue and Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde). But since the entire time sequence after X-Men: Days of Future Past, the entire timeline has been completely altered and could give way for an out and gay X-Man.
If anybody remembered him in X-Men: United, he had a scene with Wolverine where there were two apples and a banana sitting right in front of him. He also blew on Wolverine’s coke bottle. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but maybe the writers knew something we didn’t.
Shawn Ashmore recently finished working on the X-Box game, Quantum Leap, featuring him as the main protagonist with time-altering powers. And if he doesn’t get the part of gay Iceman, maybe his twin brother can.
