Over 8,000 of fans have petitioned Warner Bros Studios to make Wonder Woman bisexual in her upcoming sequel. Gianna Collier-Pitts started the petition after seeing the film and realizing they had cut out her bisexual history.
“All I ask is that Warner Bros directly acknowledge Diana Prince for who she is, who she has always been (regardless of her current love interest), and what her character could potentially represent for millions of people,” Collier-Pitts wrote in an introduction to the petition.
According to the GLAAD 2016, Studio Responsibility Index published, in 2015 only 17.5% of 126 film releases from seven major studios portrayed LGBT characters.
It was only this year that comic book writer, Greg Rucka who created the new Wonder Woman series for DC Comics, finally admitted that Wonder Woman was bisexual. Diana has been an LGBT superhero for years, she just wasn’t “out.”
Diana of Themyscira lived on Paradise Island, a civilization of only women is so far removed from the heterosexual constructs most superheroes in the DC universe are born and raised in. Even in the New 52, the women procreate with sailors only to murder them after becoming pregnant.
Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot reacted positively to Diana’s rebooted orientation and agreed her sexuality was impacted by growing up in the women-only Themyscira in an interview with Variety.
“It’s not something we’ve explored. It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense. In this movie, she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.”
